YMCA Offers Fall Classic, Winter Programs
Special Events Coordinator Bethany Riggle said the YMCA puts the emphasis on family during the race.
“I’m not sure if I personally could run a 5K, but I probably would do it with my family – that would be something I’d love to be able to do,” Riggle said. “The 5K run/walk is something that we like to have available to families to just come out and enjoy a nice walk along the trail.”
Riggle is joined by her own family – husband of eight years Craig, and children Isaiah, 5, and Chloe, 3.
The event is the second-longest race of the year, behind only the half-marathon held in the spring, and Riggle said it is well-attended.
“We usually get 300 or more participants,” Riggle said. “A lot of people like this race because it’s so scenic being along the river, especially this time of year. The change in seasons is beautiful with the trees different colors, and it’s a nice, flat course.”
Registration continues up through the day of the race. Participants who register before Wednesday, October 26 will receive a race T-shirt.
CicLAvia: Where's Next?
It seems as though each CicLAvia is attracting more and more people to the carfree festival that connects ten neighborhoods bordering and including Downtown. After past CicLAvia’s, we’ve asked where’s next? But as CicLAvia has become such a powerful symbol of what Los Angeles can be, the chorus calling for a local CicLAvia is growing.
We have just over six months to the next CicLAvia, and there are four contenders to host the next gigantic car free festival.
1) The current route, either as it exists or with a further expansion. The “standard” CicLAvia route connecting the East Hollywood Bicycle District to Hollenbeck Park has proven popular. Media estimates for the amount of people attending CicLAvia in some form dwarf similar events in other American cities. The route expanded for last weekend’s event with spurs up to El Pueblo (Olvera Street) and down to the African American Firefighter Museum. However, the two spurs weren’t as heavily traveled, or as well marked, so last weekend’s route could still prove popular and hold some new sights.

Participants will travel the Rails to Trails a little ways before returning to finish behind the new Y. Medals will be distributed to 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place male and female winners in eight age categories and trophies will be awarded to the 1 st
