firefighter lauded for work on cancer awareness
He urged the local pink heals effort, forming Pink Heals Northern Illinois and selling T-shirts pink in the village. He also helped secure the pink Heals and equip firefighters in Northern Illinois, known as Jessica.
And now, for these efforts as well as his skill and commitment as a firefighter, Rusin is also known as Buffalo Grove firefighter of the year.
Rusin was recognized by the village council this week at a ceremony also attended by his wife, Jennifer, and their children Joshua, 7, and Hannah, 10.
“He has volunteered countless hours displaying it and raising awareness,” Fire Chief Terry Vavra said, adding that Rusin also serves as a member of the department's honor guard and designed and oversaw the construction of a memorial patio for retired members of Station 26.
Rusin, who receives a trophy and $250 donation to the charity of his choice, gave credit for his efforts' success to the fire department.
“I hope everybody looks on it as a department thing, not just my pet project,” he said of Pink Heals.
Freeport Middle School celebrates 'Mona Buss Day'
As a school nurse at Freeport Middle School, Mona Buss is known for the tender loving care she gives each of her students. She is in her 23rd year at the Freeport School District. Thursday morning, she arrived at school in style, driven by her husband George, who made sure she arrived to her job at just the right time. What Mona didn’t know was that a crowd awaited her arrival.
To the cheers of a crowd of faculty, staff and students, Buss was greeted by Principal Nick Swords, to kick off “Mona Buss Day,” a day set aside to honor her service, “which goes above and beyond standard care” for the students she cares for at Freeport Middle School.
Cheerleaders waved pom pons as Buss stepped from the vehicle. Swords handed her a bouquet of flowers. With tears streaming down her cheeks, Buss made her way into school. Wearing “We Love Our Nurse” T-shirts, the crowd was a sea of black and pink on this early Thursday morning. It was a day planned for someone loved by many at this school.
