Parent says grinding keeps kids away from dance

Urbandale High School begins homecoming week activities Monday.

The homecoming dance is Oct. 15, and a parent renewed concerns this week before the school board about sexually suggestive dancing by students. Administrators and a student leader said they think the school is handling the issue appropriately.

“Grinding,” which usually involves a boy facing a girl’s back side and rubbing together, is prompting some students to not attend because it makes them feel uncomfortable, said Carla Johnson, who described grinding as lap dancing on the dance floor.

Johnson’s youngest child graduated from Urbandale High four years ago.

“I’m involved in different social groups and they have children who won’t go to the dances because of the grinding,” she said. “School is supposed to be a safe zone.”

Grinding became a highly publicized issue last year in the Johnston school district, where parents and administrators said the trend had gone too far. Students in the spring signed pledges before prom saying they understood and would practice appropriate dancing.

Worst Decisions of the Roger Goodell Era

Calls NFL commissioner Roger Goodell the " most powerful man in sports ." They are probably right.

Goodell started out as an intern in the public relations department at the NFL headquarter offices in 1982 and rose up the ranks to become the most powerful commissioner of all major sports in America.

Every decision that Goodell makes help to establish a precedent—both good and bad—then all future decisions are compared to his earlier choices. He says he stays up many nights thinking about ways to keep the NFL functioning as strong as it possibly can.

With so many things to stay on top of, it is not difficult to think that he may be spread too thin at times and that certain things may get lost in the shuffle. Many of his decisions are instantly panned for being either too harsh, or too soft, with people weighing in at both sides of the scale simultaneously. Obviously you won't be able to please everyone all the time, and that goes with the territory.

“A Fresh Perspective”: Hip Girls Look Like Idiots When They Dance ...

Saturday was a very uneventful day. Waking up exhausted and coughing my lungs out I decided to take the bus to Wal-Mart because like any college student I needed medicine and clean t-shirts. Trying to keep my trip into Wal-Mart less than 20 minutes so I could make it back to the bus stop, I accidently bought white v-necks instead of my normal crew necks.

So, as any normal teenage boy who is not quite Italian enough to pull off the gold chain, chest hair popping out of the V-neck look, I impulsively decided to shave a ‘V’ into my chest in order to hide my chest hair. Feeling a little better with the fresh new ‘V’ on my chest and the exuberant amounts of Day-Quil in my system, some friends and I watched the disappointing Penn State game. Although we lost, I was just relieved that Joe Paterno didn’t croak. The upsetting game, my deterring health, and my new V-shaped chest hair (which I was gradually growing fonder of) was making Saturday a pretty depressing day.
