Parent says grinding keeps kids away from dance
Urbandale High School begins homecoming week activities Monday.
The homecoming dance is Oct. 15, and a parent renewed concerns this week before the school board about sexually suggestive dancing by students. Administrators and a student leader said they think the school is handling the issue appropriately.
Grinding, which usually involves a boy facing a girls back side and rubbing together, is prompting some students to not attend because it makes them feel uncomfortable, said Carla Johnson, who described grinding as lap dancing on the dance floor.
Johnsons youngest child graduated from Urbandale High four years ago.
Im involved in different social groups and they have children who wont go to the dances because of the grinding, she said. School is supposed to be a safe zone.
Grinding became a highly publicized issue last year in the Johnston school district, where parents and administrators said the trend had gone too far. Students in the spring signed pledges before prom saying they understood and would practice appropriate dancing.

Obviously you won't be able to please everyone all the time, and that goes with the territory.
