Jerry Brewer Huskies stay humble as they climb their own mountain
Steve Sarkisian is still talking about that mountain.
It is the Washington football coach's pet analogy now. The Huskies must remain humble because they're inexperienced climbers, and they shouldn't look down because their journey is just starting, and they shouldn't look up because the distance they still must travel is daunting. Just worry about the next step, always, Sarkisian says. There's mission in the mountain. And there's modesty in the mountain.
It also makes for a gentler way to blow off any media question that Sark doesn't want to answer.
Ask Sarkisian what a victory over No. 7 Stanford would mean for his rising football team, and the coach says, "That's looking up the mountain. I'm not looking up the mountain. Next step, it's playing Stanford."
Ask Sarkisian if this next step is a gigantic one, and he says, "It's one that, obviously, is not on flat ground. It's a challenging step, for sure. But, again, we're not at the summit yet, by any means. It's a step we need to take if we want to go up and a challenging one, but I don't think it's a gigantic step, no.
Lots of opportunities to keep busy in Pine, Strawberry
Have you ever heard anyone say, “There’s nothing to do in a small town”? True there’s no hustle and bustle.
We have no stoplights, follow landmarks and don’t know street names. There’s a grocery store, hardware store, post office, a few restaurants, bars, and shops.
Strawberry and Pine are small towns, but they have numerous amenities nearby like hiking, cycling, off-roading, fishing, hunting and boating. The great outdoors offers limitless opportunities for adventure.
Likewise, the community groups provide many more opportunities to be creative, participate in activities, and help your neighbors.
You can be a Friend of the Library, join the Arts and Crafts Guild or quilters group, volunteer at the Thrift Shop and Senior Center, join Strawberry’s Elite, Riff-Raff Club or other group.
Apple Festival
I went behind the scenes early last Saturday and was amazed to see so many fresh baked apple treats by local residents. The Business Community Event Committee members were working efficiently to get everything set up.

the 11th anniversary of the school for the arts at Strawberry Square. They wore CASA T-shirts and carried banners with their original artwork as they thanked supporters around town during the Fifth annual CASA Walk for Arts Education on Friday.
