More than 2,200 volunteers helped out during last month’s Coastal Cleanup.
The volunteers collected 10.7 tons of trash along more than 80 miles of coastline and waterways. Among the garbage collected was 1.7 tons of tires and hundreds of beverage containers. Almost 4 tons of trash was recycled.
After the initial Coastal Cleanup, another cleanup was held in Broadkill, Prime Hook and Slaughter Beaches after a wave of medical waste, including syringes, washed ashore. That cleanup collected nearly 100 syringes.

DOVER (Oct. 18, 2011) – This year’s Delaware Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 17 drew 2,222 volunteers, who collected 10.7 tons of trash from more than 40 sites along more than 80 miles of Delaware’s waterways and coastline stretching from Wilmington to Fenwick Island. This year, nearly 4 tons of that trash was recycled, including about 1.7 tons of tires and hundreds of aluminum cans and glass and plastic beverage containers.

The amount collected represented an increase from the estimated 19,000 pounds of trash collected last year, and event organizers believe that could be because extra debris washed ashore during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
