PEQUOT LAKES — When black smoke billowed from the burning ruins of Hunts Point Sportsman’s Club last winter, it was much too soon to think about rebuilding.
In the emotional rollercoaster that followed the January fire, the club’s owners, Jim and Peggy Wills, weren’t sure they would rebuild. By April, they were ready to consider a small clubhouse. The concept grew from there and kept growing. They saw an opportunity to make changes and construct a full K-9 center with obedience and agility training. But it was venturing off into the unknown.
“Are they going to come if we build it bigger?” Peggy Wills said. “So we took a leap of faith.”
The new Hunts Point building is ready for business this fall. They’ve received positive comments, including praise from a dog obedience competitor who travels in the five-state area and spends time in a lot of facilities.
“We saw a big opportunity,” Peggy Wills said of building the new Hunts Point with the expanded dog training center. “It’s just getting it out there.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gone were the rainbow-colored sticky notes fluttering on the Apple store's glass storefront in downtown San Francisco -- a memorial to the company's late co-founder -- replaced with a sea of blue T-shirts worn by the retailer's employees who lined the sidewalk Friday morning.
The store opened an hour early at 8 a.m. to begin selling the latest incarnation of the tech giant's popular smartphone, the iPhone 4S.
By 7:30 a.m., at least 150 people waited in a line along Stockton Street that wrapped around the corner and continued west along O'Farrell Street.
The first person in line, Robert Thompson, of Emeryville, said he claimed his spot at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday and that he had never before camped out for a product release.
"If I had to ... I would do it again," Thompson said, noting that people in line were friendly, shared food and traded contact information.
